he president of Southwest Constructors, Edward R. (Dick) Rathgeber entered the demolition business in 1958 as a sideline to moving houses. Today, Southwest Constructors, also d/b/a/ Southwest Deconstructors, has evolved in to one of the oldest and largest demolition companies in Central Texas. We have cleared the way for numerous large construction projects including Holy Cross Hospital, the Austin Convention Center, Texas School for the Deaf, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (3 projects at former air base), Millennium Entertainment Center, Moffett Molecular Biology Building (U.T. Austin - former Anna Hiss Pool), ACES Building (U.T. Austin - former Taylor Hall), Austin Children's Hospital Expansion (former morgue and clinic buildings), and the multiphased expansion and renovation of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas (former Gymnasium, Kuykendall Hall, McCullough Hall, Fine Arts Center and Student Center). We have also developed somewhat of a specialty on stadiums, beginning with the west side of Royal Memorial Stadium (demolition of lower level lockerooms, restrooms and concessions, including asbestos and lead), Temple High School Stadium (demolition of press box and pre-stressed bleacher sections while leaving supporting concrete beams) and Floyd Casey/Baylor Stadium (demolition of press box superstructure, portion of existing skyboxes and concrete bleachers along with openings in exterior wall).

n addition to the large projects referenced above, Southwest Constructors also performs smaller demolition projects from wood/concrete decks to garages to "tear down" houses in the finest parts of Austin. We also work on re-development of restaurants, retail and school sites. We pride ourselves on our reliability and responsiveness, regardless of the size of the project.

ur demolition crews include experienced project managers, superintendents, foremen and operators, some of whom have worked for us for over ten years. Our personnel are kept up to date on the latest safety regulations and wear all required safety gear (furnished at company expense). Our specialized demolition equipment fleet includes a Komatsu track excavator with two buckets, a grapple (for trash), a hydraulic hammer (for breaking concrete) and a universal processor or "shear" (capable of cutting a 24" I-beam or a 16" concrete reinforced column in one bite). Due to our reputation for taking care of equipment and prompt payment, we are also usually able to readily secure additional rental equipment as needed.

Major demolition projects done at a reduced rate, at cost or completely donated have been performed for the Austin Parks Foundation, the Austin Children's Museum, Safe Place, People's Community Clinic, Meals on Wheels, The Texas Women's Chamber of Commerce, the Seton Healthcare System and the Salvation Army.
